Custom Laser Cutting, Bending and Welding: From Drawing to Finished Product

  • July-20-2026

Custom sheet-metal fabrication converts drawings, measurements or product ideas into finished components. Stainless steel parts may be used in cabinets, machine guards, ducts, panels, brackets, kitchen equipment, tanks and architectural work.

Laser cutting, bending and welding are separate operations, but the final quality depends on how well they are planned together.

Step 1: Design and drawing review

A clear drawing should define dimensions, material, thickness, bend locations, hole sizes and finish. When a client provides a sample or hand sketch, the fabricator may need to develop a production drawing.

The review should check whether the part can be cut and bent using practical tooling. Hole positions close to bends, very narrow flanges and inaccessible welds may need adjustment.

The design should also consider how multiple parts will fit during assembly. Small dimensional errors can accumulate across a large enclosure or cabinet.

Step 2: Material selection

The material specification should include stainless steel grade, sheet thickness and surface finish. Protective film may be used to reduce scratching during production.

Material direction can matter where a brushed finish is visible. Parts cut with inconsistent grain direction may look mismatched after assembly.

Step 3: Laser cutting

Laser cutting provides accurate profiles, slots and holes. It is especially useful for repeated parts and complex shapes.

Efficient nesting can reduce material waste. The cutting programme should account for part identification, orientation and any allowances needed for subsequent bending.

Cut edges should be inspected for burrs, heat effects or incomplete cuts. Some parts require deburring before bending.

Step 4: Bending

Bending transforms flat cut parts into channels, trays, boxes, brackets and panels. The bend radius and tooling affect the final dimensions.

Stainless steel springs back after bending, so the operator must compensate. Repeated parts should be checked to maintain consistency.

The order of bends is also important. A bend sequence that looks correct on a drawing may make the final bend physically impossible if the part collides with the machine tooling.

Step 5: Welding and assembly

Welding joins the formed parts into the finished structure. Heat input must be controlled because thin stainless steel can distort.

Fixtures and tack welding help maintain alignment. The welding method and joint design should match the material thickness and appearance requirement.

For visible products, weld placement and finishing should be considered during design rather than corrected after assembly.

Step 6: Grinding, polishing and finishing

Welds may be dressed, blended or left visible depending on the specification. Over-grinding can reduce material thickness and create uneven surfaces.

Brushed finishes should run consistently. Corners and edges should be checked for sharpness. Where hygiene matters, the finish should support cleaning and avoid crevices.

Step 7: Inspection and trial assembly

Dimensions, hole locations, squareness and fit should be checked before dispatch. Cabinets, doors and guards may require trial assembly. Hinges, locks and handles should operate smoothly.

For site-installed systems, marking parts and preparing an installation sequence can save time.

Advantages of combining processes with one fabricator

When cutting, bending, welding and assembly are coordinated by one team, design questions can be resolved earlier. This reduces the risk of parts being cut correctly but becoming difficult to bend or assemble.

It also provides a single point of responsibility for dimensions and finish.

Typical applications

Custom fabricated parts include:

· Machine guards and enclosures

· Cabinets and lockers

· Electrical and instrument panels

· Ducting transitions and flanges

· Trays, brackets and supports

· Kitchen counters and equipment panels

· Tank components, hoppers and chutes

· Architectural covers and canopies

· Custom prototypes and replacement parts

Custom fabrication in Manesar

AKG Steel Fabrications provides stainless steel cutting, bending, welding, polishing, assembly and installation support for industrial clients in Manesar and Gurugram.

Clients can submit drawings, photographs, samples or site requirements. A production-ready design can then be developed around the material, function and installation conditions.

The best fabricated part is not merely accurate in isolation. It must fit the complete assembly, perform its function and remain practical to manufacture again when repeat orders are required.
