Industrial Ventilation and Stainless Steel Ducting: Design and Maintenance Guide

Industrial ventilation systems remove heat, fumes, dust, smoke, vapour and process odours from work areas. Stainless steel ducting and fabricated ventilation components are often used where corrosion resistance, hygiene or regular washing is important.
A ducting system should not be treated as a collection of sheet-metal pipes. Its performance depends on the complete path from the source of contamination to the discharge point.
Begin with source capture
The most efficient system captures contaminants close to where they are produced. A canopy, hood or enclosure that is too far from the source may require much greater airflow and still perform poorly.
The dimensions and shape of the hood should suit the process. Cooking lines, welding stations, chemical tanks and heat-generating machines have different capture requirements. Side drafts, crosswinds and operator movement should also be considered.
Duct route and pressure loss
Every bend, transition and long duct section creates resistance. Abrupt changes in size or direction can increase pressure loss, noise and deposit buildup. A practical route uses smooth transitions and avoids unnecessary bends.
The route must also leave access to machines, electrical panels, filters and service areas. Ducting should not block cranes, walkways or fire-safety equipment.
Choosing the fabrication material
Stainless steel may be selected for food plants, pharmaceutical facilities, corrosive environments or exposed architectural installations. The grade and thickness depend on the application, duct size and support spacing.
Not every section needs the same construction. Large ducts may require stiffening. Outdoor ducting may require weather protection, drainage and stronger supports.
Supports and structural stability
Duct supports must account for the weight of the duct, insulation, filters and accumulated deposits. Poor support spacing can cause sagging, vibration and joint failure.
Supports should be positioned without transferring harmful loads to equipment connections. Where the system passes through walls or roofs, the openings and flashings must be planned carefully.
Access for cleaning and inspection
A ventilation system cannot be maintained properly without access panels. Grease, dust or process deposits may accumulate inside ducts, filters and hoods. Access doors should be located near bends, filters and sections likely to collect material.
In commercial kitchens, grease buildup can reduce performance and create a serious safety concern. Industrial dust systems may also require frequent inspection depending on the process.
Integration with fans and fresh air
The exhaust fan must be selected for the required airflow and system resistance. A fan cannot compensate indefinitely for badly designed ducting.
Removing large quantities of air also creates negative pressure. Adequate replacement or fresh air may be required so doors remain usable and the exhaust performs consistently. Coordination with the HVAC and electrical teams is essential.
Noise and vibration control
Fans, high air velocity and poorly supported ducts can produce noise and vibration. Flexible connectors, vibration isolators and balanced fan assemblies may be needed. Duct dimensions should also avoid excessive velocity where noise is a concern.
Rattling panels and loose supports should be corrected early because repeated vibration can damage joints.
Maintenance checklist
A routine maintenance programme can include:
· Cleaning filters, hoods and access panels
· Checking fan belts, bearings and electrical connections
· Inspecting duct supports and joints
· Looking for corrosion, leakage or vibration
· Confirming that dampers move correctly
· Removing accumulated grease, dust or residue
· Verifying that discharge points remain clear
The frequency depends on operating hours and the material being extracted.
Fabrication and maintenance support in Manesar
Manufacturing units in Manesar often operate machinery, heating systems, kitchens and process areas that require reliable extraction. Local support is useful when a system needs measurement, modification or urgent repair.
AKG Steel Fabrications provides custom stainless steel ducting, canopies, ventilation components, supports and on-site maintenance services. Existing systems can be inspected for damaged sections, poor alignment or difficult-to-clean areas.
A well-designed ventilation system improves working conditions and protects equipment, but only when fabrication, installation and maintenance are treated as one connected responsibility.
